The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) provides a standard operating procedure for movement pattern appraisal in fitness and rehabilitation. The functional movement screen allows strength and conditioning coaches such as myself to quantify movement in a similar way to how I would quantify speed, power and strength. I currently use many of the tests in my daily practice with clients. Personally I have found the tests useful for identifying movement deficiencies and subsequently prescribing appropriate and effective programs for clients. I have Gray Cook's Athletic body in Balance and Movements and I find them to be a valuable resource. The FMS is not the only way to evaluate movement but it does provide a simple and reliable method.
